A voyage, is never all smooth sailing, but to launch a scholastic journey in a raft and graduate from a luxurious yacht as the senior class of '54, shows accomplishment. The trip was rough at first and as a consequence, some abandoned s !p, but the prize for the remaining loyal sailors was to be the first to begin the last knot of their journey in the new school building. THE MARCHING BAND

Senior Sand

We are extremely proud, especially this year, of our forty-six piece G. C. H. S. Band, which has been not only a morale builder, but a provider of our community's best entertainment. Included in their many activities has been their active performances at the halves of all nine football games of this season, a concert for the Emporia Beauty Pageant, a Christmas Concert for the P. T. A. and high school, and participation in the Emporia and Petersburg Christmas Parades. They are planning to give a series of concerts at neighbor¬ ing schools and colleges and have begun this project by a concert at South Hill. Also among their many plans are a concert for the Grammar school, a spring concert, and participation in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

As their protege, the G. C. H. S. Band has in the Grammar School an active twenty-two piece Junior- Intermediate Band, who have participated in two parades and who we know will be outstanding throughout the coming year.

THE CONCERT BAND

The Glee Club, another musical organization of the school, is directed by Mr. Otis Kitchen. Through the Glee Club many pupils have begun to appreciate the higher fields of music and have received valuable voice training. Some of the outstanding activities throughout the year include the presentation of the assembly program at Christmas and the short concert given for the P.T.A. Members find much enjoyment in the Glee Club.

The Operarii Latini is an organization, which has for its purpose the promotion of the study of Latin in Greensville County High. There are, in this organization, forty-five members who meet monthly, enjoy at least four socials in various homes during the year, give a dance, and sponsor Latin Week, at which time the members decorate the entire school and compare our country to Ancient Rome. The highlight of the year is the spring banquet given in honor of the Latin Club members of the previous year, faculty, and friends.

Les Amis Avance de France and Les Amis de France are organizations composed of all students who are taking French. The purpose of the two clubs is to promote the interest of the students in reading, writing, and speaking French. This year many of the students had French pen-pals which did much to help the students in a more thorough knowledge of France. Mr. Guy Saillot is the sponsor of the two clubs.

The Senior Girls Tri-Hi-Y is a Christian Organization, the purpose of which is to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian character. In the past year it has been very outstanding under the direction of Miss Trixie Johnson. The Hi-Y Clubs of the school not only entertained at our annual Homecoming Dance, but also entertained various visiting basketball and football teams. At Christmas, the club fixed a basket for a needy family. With the help or tne otner Hi-Y s, the club conducted a community sunrise service on Easter Sunday, which was followed by breakfast at the American Legion Hut.

One of the highlights of the year was a party given us by the Hi-Y Alumni Club, which was organized iasi yc3.r.

Delegates were sent to Blue Ridge, the district convention, and the Model General Assembly.

Mr. Hansen has been a great inspiration to the club.

The Senior Boys' Hi-Y is a very active organization in the school and community, which helps to build strong Christian character in young people. This year our president, Earl Lucas, also served as president of the district Hi-Y conference held at Petersburg, and Chris Harrell was elected vice-president of the Hi-Y conference to be held next year. Wellford Inge was elected Doorkeeper of the House in the Model General Assembly. The club also fixed a basket at Christmas for a needy family.

The Senior Boys' Club, with the help of the other Hi-Y clubs, is responsible for having a prayer said each day before lunch. It also helped sponsor a Halloween carnival, promote good sportsmanship among teams in the district, and helped conduct a community sunrise service on Easter Sunday, which was followed by breakfast at the Legion Hut.

Industrial Arts Club

The Industrial Arts Club is an organization for those who are interested in a good hobby. There are no definite requirements for membership, although previous shop experience proves to be helpful in club work.

The club builds small articles for sale. Money obtained from club projects is used for improving the shop and for purchasing additional shop equipment.

The Safety Patrol, organized for the welfare of all school students, seeks to promote safety on the buses, playgrounds, and streets. By following the advice of the patrolmen, students not only insure their own safety, but also set a good example for safety among the younger students. To meet its aim, however, the Patrol must have the co-operation of each student in high school.

The Library Club, in its second year of being organized, has increased its membership fifty per cent over last year's membership. Following our motto, "Toward New Horizons", The Future Homemakers' Club has had a very active year with forty- five interested members.

Our summer was a very eventful one, with Hattie Allen attending State Convention at Radford College, and with a group of members spending a wonderful week at Margart's Beach, where Joyce Whitehead won a blue ribbon in the fashion show.

Highlights of our year’s work have been Federation Meeting held at our school, Federation Meeting at Petersburg at which Betty Jane Allen was elected secretary, a Christmas party, a Valentine Outing, Banquet, Spring Rally, and the wonderful picnic given to us by our club mothers.

EAGLES FOOTBALL --- 1953 GROUP II DISTRICT III CHAMPIONS

With a fairly impressive record of two losses and eight wins in '52, the 1953 version of the Emporia Eagles entered the pigskin parade with practically raw material and little prospect of maintaining the usual successful football season of the Eagles. But from the moment training began on the nineteenth day of August, that traditional Eagle spirit, which has characterized so many seasons in the past, sent an optimistic sentiment through the air that later proved not in vain.

Under the fine coaching of Coach Ed Drew, and with the help of the seven lettermen, Wesley Newsome, Jim Jeans, Carlton Butler, Don Tillar, Julian Clary, Red Harris, and Bunny Bunn, this year’s team emerged from an inexperienced team and went straight through to win the GROUP II, DISTRICT III CHAMPIONSHIP.

This year there were three seniors on the team; Julian Clary, and Co-Captains Jim Jeans and Carlton Butler.

The seniors wish to say that they are sure that next year’s team will also take the championship, because they have some fine men. The seniors wish you the "best of luck".

Under the fine leadership of Mrs. Dorrice Rogers, Coach, the girls’ basketball team has had a very successful season for the 1953-54 year. With only three lettermen, Co-Captain Brady, Co-Captain Grizzard, and M. Moore, returning to the squad from the preceding year, the team has lost only 2 con¬ ference games so far. By continuing the hard playing and diligent practice, the squad hopes to compete in the Group 2, District 3 Tournament.

EAGLES’ BASKETBALL

Under the guidance of Coach Ed Drew, the Greensville County High School basketball team experienced one of its toughest seasons. The Eagles opened the season with a bang by winning their first four games. Then the team had hard luck and went into a losing streak. In spite of this, the Eagles did not give up but fought even harder to overcome it. Finally, late in the season, they began to show improvement.

The Eagles were led by Co -Captains Jimmy Jeans and Wesley Newsome. Thelettermen that returned from last year were Wesley Newsome, Bunny Bunn, Jimmy Jeans, Richard Bloom, and Don Tillar.

Next year will be a very promising year for the Eagles because almost everyone who played on the first string this year will be back then. Jimmy Jeans and Wellford Inge are the players on the team who will not return.

The Midgets started this year under the fine coaching of Coach Dan Vacca. They faced a tough bunch of boys to start with and were not prepared to go into the game without some fear of the man in front of them. Later in the season, however, they began to catch on and won four straight games.

Greensville County High School can look forward to having a fine and experienced team in the future with these boys.

Class History

Five short years ago, we, the graduates of 1954, then a crew of 108 sturdy seafarers, set sail on a small raft. Like all young sailors, we had a destination and a goal. We aspired to successfully complete a voyage- -a voyage that would cover a span of five years of education.

At first, the waters were quite rough, and many whirlpools caught our tiny vessel. But with the leadership of our fine captain, Earl Lucas, with his staff of Katie Lynch, Mosetta Sykes, and Jane Gill, we managed to keep our course.

During the first year, a year of adjusting, we became accustomed to our vessel, learned the customs of fellow seafarers, and accepted our own duties and responsibilities. Even now happy memories remain of our very success¬ ful "April Showers Dance", the high light of the year.

Spring came and went without any signs of its arrival or departure on our wide horizons of sky and water. Then came summer with its speedier sailing. It wasn't long before the carefree days of summer were gone, and we again resolved to work harder- -each resolved to be a better sailor. Needless to say, some of our original crew had abandoned ship, but those who remained loyal, reaped rich rewards. Now we became the owners of a better craft, the canoe. Earl Lucas was again selected commander of our vessel, with the help of Shirley Knapp, Vivian Maize, and Jane Gill.

The waters were not as tempestuous on this, the second notch of our journey. Perhaps this was due to the fact that we were accepted by the older sailors- -the seasoned crew of the great ship G.C.H.S. Being a part of such, we were accepted by many organizations, and we really became acquainted with life at sea.

We were quite proud of one member of our crew, Sylvia Harrison, as she displayed her skill in spelling, win¬ ning first place in a forensic spelling contest sponsored throughout the entire school. This was quite an achieve¬ ment for a freshman. This acclaim was again won by Sylvia during her sophomore and Junior years. Other out¬ standing spellers include Jean Wrenn and Mosetta Sykes.

Another successful ball was sponsored by our crew in this our Freshman year. It was also in the spring of the year that we dropped anchor in the James River in order to tour colonial Jamestown and Williamsburg.

Again our summer hurried by, and we were proud sophomores commanding a speedboat. Led by Captain Earl Lucas, with Jeannette Allen and Channing Weaver assisting at the Helm, we had a very successful voyage high¬ lighted by the unique "Bunny Hop". Thus ended the third notch of our journey.

Happily we sailed on to new horizons. Then, at long last, we were the junior members of the great ship G.C.H.S. Our new captain Shirley Knapp, assisted by her junior officers, Edris Grizzard, Shirley Gordon, and Peggy Grizzard, quite capably led our sailboat safely on. How vividly can we recall that lovely Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom with its "Enchanted Castles". It was said to be the best ever given, and one that we shall long remember. And how well can we remember that wonderful picnic given us near the end of that part of our voyage by the graduates of yesteryear! But even more memorable than all else, I believe, was the day when, at long last, we gained our first material reward for "having kept our course" and "having remained loyal to the cause". It was on April 19, 1953, that we became proud possessors of our rings of blue and gold.

That graduation night of '53 meant much to us- -more than any previous one had, for when the last diploma was given, we no longer were carefree Juniors, but dignified Seniors. Even now, land became visible on our far horizon. Our journey was near its end.

Those happy summer days passed very rapidly, and we, a proud group of forty-three Seniors again assembled together for the last notch of a very important voyage- -the voyage of education in public schools. Again Earl Lucas was chosen to command our craft, a luxious yacht. His mission was a bit different on this last knot of the journey; it was to guide us safely past the rough waters to the port! His staff included Mosetta Sykes, Edris Grizzard, Mead Jones, and Katie Lynch. In this, our Senior year, we were entrusted with leading the great ship G.C.H.S., a new and more spacious ship than we had ever before commanded.

Before landing, there were several projects to be completed. Not only did we, as previous graduating classes had done, issue "The Riparian", but we made it the best ever printed by our school. How our crew worked to make our Senior play, "The Atomic Blonde", a howling success, one that will long be remembered. We were very for¬ tunate to be able to drop anchor near Richmond to attend one of the sessions of the General Assembly. Then came the lovely Junior-Senior Banquet, given to us by the "graduates of tomorrow". It was indeed the fitting climax of our voyage through school.

As we completed these projects, one by one, we came closer to the harbor. Land not only was visible; it was very near. Surely we were not actually this near to shore! Our voyage could not be this near its close. Then we

found that this was not the final port at all! It was but a stopping place, an island in the sea.

Tonight, as we receive our diplomas, which are our second bit of recognition for achievement and reward for standing fast to our course, we realize that we have not finished--we haveonly begun. We areonly dropping anchor

for an hour. Soon we are to embark again on an even longer journey on the sea of life. No longer will we be a

single crew on a single mission, but rather parts of many crews. What will the future hold? How are we to know9 "Tonight we launch, where shall we anchor?"
